Coyotes may be hunting cats in Gainesville

Remember earlier this month when I was curious about coyotes in Florida? More news on coyotes has turned up, this time in the Gainesville Sun, where folks in the area think cats have gone missing because coyotes are hunting them.

Have you seen a coyote where you live?

We have lost three cats to the two coyote dens not half-a-mile from my door.

At night, when the emergency vehicles go blaring by, you can hear a chorus of over 15 different voices howling!

A neighbor, two roads over had her puppy taken when she went inside for 5-minutes after she let the pup out, in an enclosed yard, to go potty.

I for one hope to be hunting them soon as I get used to the school schedule (I am a school bus driver.)

We live within about 1/2 mile from the area the article was written about in the Gainesville Sun. Two of our beloved cats and at least one other we know of from our small, 23-home neighborhood have gone missing in the last 2 months. My neighbor saw a coyote crossing SW 8th Ave at dusk. Our cats and our routine have remained essentially unchanged for the last 9 years. Clearly the local coyote population is encroaching and growing bolder.

Over the last 5 days I’ve been confronted by a large coyote on the rattle snake creek area between NW 10th ave and NW 14th Ave. Both confrontations occured at 9am while walking my dog. The first occurence was Fri Sep 7th and the coyote came up 10th Ave from the creek area towards my dog and I. Luckily a woman in a van dorve by and stopped to get between the coyote and us. The second time was Sunday, Sep 9 and the coyote was at the edge of the woods watching us. This is a very residential area in the Florida Park neighborhood and the coyote seems to have no fear of humans. We have heard of numerous cats disappearing in this area.
